Computer vision is a branch of AI that interprets images and video. It can identify objects, read text, and recognize conditions. In field service, it lets an AI identify a part, read an error code off a display, or confirm a cable is seated correctly, all from a technician's phone camera.
Computer vision models analyze what a camera captures to detect and classify what's in the frame. Newer multimodal AI takes it further by reasoning about the image in context. It doesn't just recognize a control panel. It can tell that the panel shows error E-27, which points to a fuser fault.
Field service is visual work. A lot of what technicians need to communicate is easier to show than explain, and a lot of what an expert needs to check can be confirmed from a photo.
Technicians can scan a display, snap a photo of a part, or share live video. The AI uses those visuals to diagnose problems and verify work, and they carry over to a remote expert if the session gets escalated.
